Madonna and Child

15th century (est.)
Church of St. Simeon, Zadar, Croatia

The date estimate is based on the vogue for naked Christ Childs in the 15th century, which receded during the 16th. Unlike the majority of Madonna and Child images, Mary and the baby direct their gaze at each other. The book in Mary's left hand is also unusual. Like those pictured in Annunciations of the period, it may refer to the prophecies in the Old Testament regarding the Incarnation.
